Worship Centers - Multi-Purpose Worship Centers

As noted in Strategic Facilities Plans, a church is often well served when the first phase of its development includes a multi-purpose center. Typically these are gymnasium-sized and shaped spaces, varying in capacity of seating between 250 and 900 people. (900 people would be a professional basketball sized court, with over-run on the ends and sides.) They are typically designed with a rectangular geometry, because this is more conducive to multiple uses, and can be scheduled to become the permanent activities center in the future. One advantage is that these spaces tend to be among the most economical spaces to build. They tend to be favorable to the pre-engineered building systems of repetitive long span trusses, which add economy to the project. One of the most important considerations, however, is the acoustic performance of the space. Many gymnasiums are echo chambers. It can be very challenging to find a sound system that will perform well in that space. For this reason it is advisable to consult with an audio/acoustic expert during the design phase of the project. They will make recommendations regarding materials, design consideration, ceiling systems, sound absorbing panels, and flooring surfaces.
The flooring is a major consideration. Whereas a very hard surface may be desirable for sports use and for ease of cleaning and maintenance, it can also be very noisy when shoes walk on them or chairs move across them. One good multi-purpose surface alternative is sports carpeting. This is an extra dense carpet that is rubber backed and will allow basketballs to bounce the same as it would on a hardwood floor. Sports lines or AWANA circles can be cut into the carpet in different colors to provide the layout for alternative uses. The carpet itself helps to minimize the acoustical bouncing of sound waves from overhead speaker systems that are oriented towards the floor where the people sit. It can also be used for a banqueting substitute; however a special shampoo/cleaner is usually required.
Lighting systems must also be designed for multiple use. Bright levels of illumination are generally desirable for sports use, whereas, dimmable controlled lighting is desirable for worship services. This often dictates the need for two different lighting systems in the room: one that is dimmable and the other with a high intensity discharge system. Furthermore, any equipment that is mounted for theatrical lighting or video projection will often need some type of protection to prevent damage by sports equipment. The orientation of the seating within the space also needs to be considered. Placing the stage on an end or a side will dictate how the seating will be arranged. With a stage on the end, the seating layout will be linear/basilica-like, whereas a side stage enables seating to be curved and more informal. Generally, larger storage areas are required with these spaces so the chairs can be stored during sports uses, or tables stored for banquet use.
