Creative Ideas for Challenging Times
November 14th, 2008 by Jeff
It is difficult enough for a church to face the challenges of growth and change in times of economic prosperity, but when the economy as a whole suffers, those challenges become even greater. There are, however, many opportunities to be found for a church that is willing to think creatively. In this article I would like to explore some creative solutions that we have used with our clients.
Of course, the simplest approach is to renovate or expand an existing facility. Many church members have difficulty imagining a church facility functioning in a way that is different from what they have come to accept and know. What is needed is a creative outsider to show them the potential that they already possess. Many of our partner churches have been surprised at the effectiveness of space re-orientation or shifting and its positive results on their ministries.
For larger issues of growth, a simple renovation may not be enough. The current economic downturn is having a negative effect on the real estate market. Most economic projections forecast more commercial real estate available than potential buyers, which is driving the cost of these properties down significantly. Many existing commercial properties are ideal for church use for a number of reasons. First of all, there is often a shorter and easier municipal approval process for re-using an existing property than developing a new one. There are lower construction costs in renovation and retrofitting an existing property. Cost for parking, street improvements, storm water management, etc. on many of our current projects are reducing the size of the building the church is able to afford on the property. There are also environmental advantages as well as community relationship advantages in restoring an existing vacant property. In the past, we have successfully turned strip malls, multi-plex theaters, manufacturing warehouses, union halls, and baking factories into vibrant and successful churches. Examples of such buildings can been seen in the four “Creative Solutions in Action” posts.
Another creative growth solution is to use Technology to expand through multi-site campuses. There are a number of advantages in this approach. The size of the property that needs to be developed for growth does not need to be as large since it is only an extension of the main site. The current church property would not be placed on the market for sale. (Church buildings tend to be difficult to sell even in good economic climates.) This approach also spreads the geographic reach of the church to further communities. Video feeds with live worship bands make this alternative a fulfilling worship experience.
God is the ultimate creative designer who often turns difficult situations into wonderful opportunities for growth. As economic conditions decline, the church needs to be bold and creative like the God we serve.
