The leaders at Woodside Presbyterian Church caught our attention with the creative ways in which they engaged their congregation throughout the entire process of planning and building an addition to their facility. They recently moved into their new spaces—an expanded sanctuary (designed as a multi-purpose space) with a new sound system, a gracious fellowship lobby, and new classrooms. On the day that they celebrated the opening of their new worship center they had activities for everyone. It was a true festival! The speaker at the service focused on the role of faith in growth. After the service, they encouraged their congregants to join a walk for hunger in memory of their main speaker’s wife. Then everyone returned to the church for food, games and fun activities for all ages.

At the beginning of plan development, they solicited the help of 75 members, in seven sub-teams, to review and make recommendations on the plan. As the process proceeded, they formed special teams for unique purposes of overseeing such areas as landscaping, kitchen and youth rooms.

Woodside’s groundbreaking service had representatives from several generations. When the foundation for the building had been dug and concrete was about to be poured, each member of the congregation placed a stone into the foundation channel. When the steel went up, indelible markers were handed out to the members so that they could write a prayer or Scripture on the frame of the Church.

The steeple topping event was a great success! As the steeple was being placed on the roof, the people were making their own “steeples” out of ice cream cones topped with an assortment of goodies. It was a joyous time and fostered unity among the members.

Throughout the construction process, a “wish list” was posted for individuals to be able to sponsor special items that were needed. Congregants even had an opportunity to help select fabric colors for chairs. A large bowl of pennies was placed in the center of the place where three fabrics were displayed. One voted for their favorite fabric by placing a penny into the box displaying it.

It was a privilege for us to work with this friendly church whose leaders display the fine qualities of Jesus in their relationships with their church family. So whatever building project your church is considering now, why not look for your own creative ways to involve your congregation!
