Community outreach is at the center of the vision of Fabre Street Pentecostal Church. This congregation, located in Montreal, Quebec, has been serving the Italian-Canadian community since 1920. Their ministries continue to grow as they effectively make disciples of all ages. A look at the church’s vision for the future showed the leadership that they could not continue to operate effectively in their current facility. They wanted to find a building where all of their ministries could be under one roof.  Wanting to wisely invest the resources God has given them, they looked for a building that could be “recycled.” An empty warehouse was found in nearby St. Leonard, Quebec.

The struggling economy is impacting lives globally. In the past, churches tended to purchase land and build a new structure on it; this may not be the best option any longer. The landscape is filled with empty buildings available at a reasonable cost. Warehouses are particularly desirable as they provide a shell that can easily be converted.  In addition, most have sufficient open space around them for children’s play areas and parking.

Purchasing an existing building to retrofit also means moving into an established community, rather than open space that is typically outside of existing communities. This is another factor which attracted the church to this option. Several of the elements included in their design are meant to be shared with the community. A daycare center for eighty children, which is a great need in Montreal, will be built first.  Other portions of the design include a café that will be open to the public, a dedicated gym, classrooms, and both small and large meeting areas.

We are excited about the future of Fabre Street Pentecostal. They have stepped out in faith with the vision that God has given them, and have the commitment to see it to completion. (Now they will need a new name as they shine the light of Christ to the people in their “new” community.)
